Backported OpenVPN 1.5.0 to Woody

I backported OpenVPN from Debian Unstable (Sid) to Stable (Woody). Works great.

The file is openvpn_1.5.0-1.woody-1_i386.deb.

Here's a Makefile to build it on Cygwin/*nix.

Openvpn Plugin - Minimum configuration

Well, I got it to work finally. Thanks for all your help ross. Heres a summary of what I found worked:

Minimum config for Openvpn Plugin:

Pe builder 3.1.10a, with plugins:
Xpe.inf
Xpe-defaults.inf
Openvpn.inf
Nu2menu.inf
Ramdisk.inf
xpe 1.0.7
openvpn 2.0.9
InfCacheBuild 2.0

cmo:

Glad to hear you got it working.

Openvpn Plugin

Thanks again ross. I followed your example and turned off all plugins except:

Xpe.inf
Xpe-defaults.inf
Openvpn.inf
Nu2menu.inf
Ramdisk.inf

however I get the same result. when I kick off vpninstall.cmd it asks me to locate the tap0801.sys driver with a window. Did you have to do this or did you modify the addtap.bat to point to the driver? When I do point to it (with the window) it says "Tap install failed." The same as before. I have to ask, what version of openvpn or more importantly the tap driver (tap0801.sys) and oemwin2k.inf are you using? Both of my files show last modified on 10/1/2006. I tried replacing with these files with an older version but I get the same result. All I can think of is there must be a version difference between yours and mine. I'm using vmware v4 but I don't think that should matter.

Software versions I used
Pe builder 3.1.10a
xpe 1.0.7
openvpn 2.0.7

Thanks for all your help thus far.

cmo:

I'm using:

PE builder 3.1.10a
XPE 1.0.7
OpenVPN 2.0.9 (not 2.0.7)

Why are you using OpenVPN 2.0.7?

Also, I'm using an updated version of pebuilder.mak to build.

This script also installs Sherpya's Build Scripts 20050322, which uses version 1.7 of his InfCacheBuild tool (version 1.9 is available).

If you are not using InfCacheBuild, I suggest trying it.

Openvpn Plugin

Ross, my last post was using the following config:

pe builder 3.1.10
xpe builder 1.0.7

Btw, thanks for your help.

cmo,

I installed BartPE, using a Windows XP Pro SP1 with SP2 and all hotfixes slipstreamed in via xpsp2.cmd. Then I used only the following plugins

ross@whisper /d/pebuilder/pebuilder3110a/plugin
$ find . -name '*.inf' -print0 | xargs -0 egrep -liR "Enable=1"
./autoramresizer/autoramresizer.inf
./nu2menu/nu2menu.inf
./openvpn/openvpn.inf
./penetcfg/penetcfg.inf
./ramdisk/ramdisk.inf
./xpe/xpe-defaults.inf
./xpe/xpe.inf

In VMWare, I initially can't ping the host system (10.0.0.1). I fix this by running penetcfg, and clicking [Apply].

Next, I open a DOS window, and type:

CD X:\Programs\OpenVPN
vpninstall
..\vpnstart

Here is a screenshot:

I also have errors in my setupapi.log, but they don't appear to be causing me any problems:

cmo,

I removed even more plugins from the above list:

./bartpe/bartpe.inf
./dcomlaunch/dcomlaunch.inf
./xpe/xpe-crypto.inf
./xpe/xpe-mmc.inf
./xpe/xpe-pnp.inf
./ztree/ztree.inf

and it's still working. I probably could remove ./penetcfg/penetcfg.inf too, as the network came up this time without a problem.

BartPE and OpenVPN

This may be an old issue but, can someone help me get the Openvpn plugin for Bartpe to work. I can install the plugin as well as the PESetEnv plugin (needed). After I start up Bartpe and try to install the tap device I get an error, something like "tap install failed". Is there a work around for this? I noticed a few others who had a similiar problem. I would love to get this to work.

Regards;

cmo:

I've updated the OpenVPN plugin at http://smithii.com/files/plugins/ that should work for you now.

It works for me using a bare bones XPE install. I haven't tried it yet in a non-XPE environment. It no longer requires PESetEnv.

Please try it, and report any difficulties you have, if any. Please report any errors you find in the System event log, and in B:\logs\setupapi.log.

Openvpn Plugin

Thanks for the update ross.

It's still is giving me problems though. It looks like a signing problem, (see log file below). Also, I've tried the addtaps.bat again after disabling the signing policy from that reg file with the same result.

Finally, when I kick off the addtaps.bat it asks for the location of the tap0801.sys driver. I've pointed to x:\1386\system32\driver\tap0801.sys with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The below is an excerpt from the log during installing the Tap driver using AddTaps.bat

cmo:

I had the same problem when I tried installing OpenVPN in a non-XPE environment. In XPE, it works fine.

Let me test again with a truly bare bones XPE environment, and see if I experience the same problem you're having.
